The Eastern end of this three story masonry structure was experiencing foundation settlement. The damage present was attributed to loose shallow supporting soils that were underlain by stiff plastic clays beginning at 7 feet below grade. A total of 22 foundation underpinning supports were installed on 3 foot centers to accommodate the significant loads of the building. The piers were driven to an average depth of 31 feet below grade. Each pier was individually load tested in excess of 18 tons, more than double the working load required.
