Shallow Slurry Grouting – Keypoints

This approach is best suited for a particular soil type and condition. In order for this approach to be a productive soil enhancement technique, it requires a soil mass that will allow the cementitious mixture to permeate into the soil matrix when pumped in under pressure. It should be noted however, that it can be very difficult to even get a “micro-fine” type cement mixture to penetrate into clay or other tightly compacted soils.

This approach can be ineffective when trying to improve a highly organic soil zone like peat or muck. This soil mix can typically allow a large grout “bulb” to develop when the cement mixture is injected under pressure. The resulting problem with this scenario, is that the underlying soils are also likely to be incapable of supporting this large cement mass, and it is likely to sink under its own weight.

Poorly Compacted Fill –
This approach is ideally suited when used to help compact and densify a loosely compacted backfill zone. Quite frequently these fill materials are not placed in the prescribed layers or lifts. When this happens the compaction equipment used cannot adequately reach to the full depth of the placed soil zone. This can result in long-term consolidation and eventually lead to settlement damage.

Broken Plumbing Line –
This approach can be used to help fill washed out voids that are created by a broken or uncapped plumbing line. The cement mixture can be injected to help re-establish the continuous support that was lost beneath a structure or slab. It is very important for the plumber to locate and repair all breaks before employing this stabilization technique, especially when it involves a sewer or septic line.
